Dr. Nakasi Rose

Technical Lead Person

Dr. Rose Nakasi, an Artificial Intelligence Research Scientist and Lecturer at Makerere University, is breaking new ground in health technology as the Head of the Makerere Artificial Intelligence Health Lab. She spearheads innovative projects like the Lacuna-funded initiative for Sexual Reproductive and Maternal Health and the Google-funded “Ocular” project, focusing on AI-driven mobile microscopy diagnosis of Malaria, Tuberculosis, and cancer. Her dedication to healthcare is evident through her work with the NIH DS-I Africa consortium on the DS-I Malaria project in Uganda. With a PhD in Computer Science from Makerere University, Rose is making significant strides in AI and health technology. Rose also leads the ITU/WHO/WIPO Topic Group on “AI based detection of Malaria” under the Global Initiative AI for Health (GIAI4H and a committee member on the CODATA International Data Policy Committee.

Nsumba Solomon

Data Scientist

Solomon Nsumba is a highly skilled software engineer with a proven track record of success in the development of web and mobile applications. He is also a talented researcher with a strong focus on machine learning and computer vision. Solomon holds a Bachelor’s and master’s degree in software engineering and data communication from Makerere University and is currently pursuing his PhD in Computer Science at the University of Washington. He is also a member of the Makerere AI lab and the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington.Solomon’s work has been instrumental in transforming prototypes into usable software for various target audiences. He is sure to continue making a significant impact in his work, both at Sunbird AI and through his ongoing research efforts.

Tusubira Jeremy Francis

Lead microscopy

(Automated Mobile Microscopy for Malaria Diagnosis and surveillance in Uganda (Research Scientist) Jeremy is a machine learning engineer specializing in applied computer vision and with a background in software engineering. With 4 years of experience he has worked on several problems involving the utilization of ML-based image analysis techniques in health and agriculture domains.

Dr. Andama Alfred

Technical team lead computer aided design

Alfred is a Principal Laboratory Technician at Makerere University College of Health Sciences and holds a master’s degree in biomedical laboratory sciences and management from Makerere University. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Microbiology at Makerere University College of Health Sciences, with a focus on evaluating the diagnostic performance of a novel, breath analysis technology based on volatile organic compounds for TB screening and diagnosis in persons living with HIV
